International Coaching Federation (ICF)

As ICF Coaches we will:

  1. Maintain confidentiality, neutrality, and professionalism while working with couples. Avoid taking sides and respect the values and decisions of both partners, even if they differ from our own beliefs.

  2. Approach the couple with openness, curiosity, and a focus on growth.

  3. Collaborate with the couple to define clear goals for coaching (e.g., improving communication, rebuilding trust). Set boundaries around roles, expectations, and the scope of coaching.

  4. Create a safe space where both partners feel heard and respected. Foster an environment where they can share vulnerabilities without fear of judgement or shame.

  5. Stay focused and fully engaged during sessions, even if emotions run high. Be flexible and adapt to the couple’s needs, responding appropriately to their dynamics and challenges.

  6. Listen not only to what is said but also to the emotions, patterns and underlying issues in the relationship. Validate each partner’s perspective and clarify misunderstandings.

  7. Help the couple uncover deeper insights about their relationship dynamics. Use powerful questioning to explore their beliefs, triggers, and patterns of interaction, guiding them toward new perspectives.

  8. Support the couple in developing actionable strategies to improve their relationship. Encourage them to apply these strategies between sessions and celebrate their progress.
